Vietnam's 9-Month Coffee Exports Reach $6.6 Billion Amid Volume Growth and Price Moderation

Vietnam exported nearly 1.5 million tons of coffee for $6.6B in the first nine months of 2026, as a 16.2% volume increase helped counter a 16.66% decline in export prices.

Nine-Month Trade Performance and Volume Expansion

Vietnam's coffee trade sector recorded substantial outbound shipments during the first nine months of 2026, exporting nearly 1.5 million metric tons of coffee and generating approximately $6.6 billion in export turnover. Trade figures reflect a strong acceleration in physical volumes shipped to international markets, with total export volume rising 16.2% year-on-year compared to the same period in 2025.

This expansion in physical shipments was highlighted by a sharp increase late in the third quarter. In September 2026 alone, Vietnam shipped approximately 124,000 metric tons of coffee, representing a 53% increase compared to export levels recorded in September 2025. The robust delivery pace across the nine-month period underscored sustained distribution capacity across key supply chain corridors.

Price Index Adjustments and Revenue Realization

While shipment volumes demonstrated double-digit growth, the broader financial performance of the sector was influenced by shifting global commodity pricing dynamics. Total export value fell by 7% year-on-year across the nine-month timeframe, as softer international market values tempered total revenue generation.

Underpinning this divergence between export volume and aggregate turnover was a decrease in unit realization. Official trade metrics show that Vietnam's average coffee export price index fell by 16.66% year-on-year over the nine-month period. The 16.2% volume surge served to partially cushion total export earnings against the downward movement in international benchmark prices.

Key Destination Markets and Processed Coffee Trade

European and Asian buyers remained central to Vietnam's coffee trade balance. Germany continued as the primary individual destination market, receiving 13% of total coffee exports during the period. Italy represented the second-largest buyer, accounting for an 8.2% share of aggregate shipments, while Japan secured the third position with 7.2% of total exports.

Alongside green coffee flows, the value-added segment maintained stable performance. Processed coffee exports generated $1.2 billion in revenue during the first eight months of 2026, marking a 1.7% increase compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. This segment represented 19.9% of total coffee export revenue recorded during those initial eight months.
