USDA Directs $825 Million to International Food Assistance Programs
USDA announces an $825 million 'America First' food assistance package, procuring U.S. commodities for global emergency programs and school feeding initiatives.
Strategic Overview of the $825 Million Assistance Allocation
On October 8, 2026, the United States Department of Agriculture announced an $825 million investment designated as 'America First' international food assistance. The program channels funding into the procurement of U.S.-grown agricultural commodities to supply emergency relief and developmental food security programs across multiple international destinations.
The capital injection directs U.S. agricultural production directly into humanitarian distribution pipelines, bridging domestic commodity supply with urgent global food aid requirements. Under this initiative, federal procurement structures are deployed to purchase agricultural goods produced by American farmers and transfer them to regions facing acute food deficits.
Food for Peace Procurement and Emergency Deployments
A central component of the funding is directed through the Food for Peace program. The USDA confirmed that $357 million in agreements has been committed across eight specific projects to support Food for Peace operations.
Through these agreements, approximately 129,000 metric tons of U.S.-grown agricultural commodities will be procured. The acquired volume is earmarked for emergency food assistance operations in four designated nations experiencing critical humanitarian needs: Ethiopia, Kenya, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Haiti.
By sourcing 129,000 metric tons directly from U.S. producers, the initiative facilitates targeted commodity movements into vulnerable distribution networks across East Africa, Central Africa, and the Caribbean.

McGovern-Dole Program Focuses on School Meal Distribution
Alongside emergency allocations, the USDA's package finances school feeding programs administered under the McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition Program.
Under this stream, the agency will purchase 62,150 metric tons of U.S.-grown agricultural commodities. The procured foodstuffs will support school meal operations across seven partner countries: Bolivia, Cambodia, Ecuador, Guinea, Honduras, Liberia, and Timor-Leste.
The distribution channels established under the McGovern-Dole awards expand structured institutional nutrition programs, supplying agricultural commodities to educational systems across West Africa, Latin America, and Southeast Asia.
