USDA Announces $1.34 Billion Domestic Fertilizer Initiative

On October 22, 2026, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced the selection of eight fertilizer manufacturing projects under the Fertilizer Investment & Expansion for Long-Term Domestic Supply (FIELDS) program.

The initiative represents more than $1.34 billion in total proposed investment across the domestic agricultural input sector. To accelerate project deployment, the USDA is providing approximately $573 million in proposed federal funding. The primary objective of the program is to expand domestic fertilizer manufacturing capacity and support U.S. farmers.

Targeted Nutrients and Import Reduction Goals

The eight selected projects are designed to expand production capacity across four core fertilizer categories essential for agricultural production:

  • Nitrogen
  • Phosphorus
  • Potassium (Potash)
  • Sulfur

By building domestic capacity in these key nutrient categories, the program aims to systematically reduce reliance on foreign fertilizer imports, bolstering long-term domestic supply stability for agricultural producers.

Key Project Spotlight: Intrepid Potash Facility

Among the eight project selections, the largest proposed federal allocation is $139 million awarded to Intrepid Potash.

This funding is slated to support the construction of a sulfate of potash manufacturing facility located near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The facility represents a central component of the program's potassium production goals, providing dedicated domestic manufacturing capacity for specialized potash products.
